History of Buhl Mansion

Buhl Mansion was built in 1890 by Frank H. Buhl, a wealthy industrialist often called the “Father of the Industrial Shenango Valley.” He constructed the grand stone castle in Sharon, Pennsylvania, as a wedding gift for his wife, Julia Forker Buhl. Designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the mansion symbolized both Buhl’s success in the steel industry and his devotion to Julia. The couple, however, had no children, and after Frank’s death in 1920, Julia inherited his estate. Following her passing in 1936, the property was eventually sold, ending the Buhl family’s direct connection to the mansion.

Jim and Donna Winner’s Vision to Restore the Castle

The 2½-story stone mansion reflected the wealth and elegance of the Gilded Age. Over the years, however, the home changed ownership many times and eventually fell into disrepair, becoming a shadow of its former glory.

By the late 20th century, the once-grand estate faced the threat of demolition. That fate was avoided thanks to the vision and dedication of Sharon philanthropists Jim and Donna Winner. In the 1990s, they purchased the mansion and undertook an extensive restoration project. Their goal was not only to save an important piece of local history but also to transform it into a place of beauty and hospitality.

The Winners invested countless resources into restoring the architecture, preserving original details such as woodwork, stained glass, and stone masonry, while also updating the property with modern comforts. The main staircase and stained glass were missing, so it was completely replaced during the renovation. On New Year’s Eve in 1997, the Buhl Mansion reopened and hosted its first overnight guest–reborn as a luxury bed and breakfast and spa. Today, it stands as both a tribute to the Buhl legacy and to Jim and Donna Winner’s commitment to preservation and community.
